The State of New Jersey is making valiant strides in addressing the needs of students and families during out-of-school time. As a collaborative leader in driving additional dollars, talent and attention towards the after-school sector, Citizen Schools is working with organizations like NJAfter3 and the New Jersey School Age Care Coalition to improve the educational resources available to students when the traditional school day ends.

Citizen Schools has partnered with Newark Public Schools, members of Mayor Cory Booker's administration, and other local community stakeholders in making Newark a flagship city for Citizen Schools in the Garden State. From here, we hope to expand our network of programs into Jersey City, Trenton and Camden.

Educating Children

  • In addition to their apprenticeship learning, students spend about an hour a day working with trained educators on their homework and honing critical academic skills.

Strengthening Communities

  • Whether it's cooking meals for resident families at the Ronald McDonald House in New Brunswick, collecting and distributing clothes for the less fortunate, or educating female adolescents about current issues like the HPV virus, Citizen Schools does not only benefit from volunteerism, it instills it as an expectation in its students and staff.
  • In Newark, through actively participating in Councilman Ron Rice Jr.'s West Ward Collective, The City's Youth Development Committee, or The United Way of Essex/West Hudson's Vision Council, Citizen Schools is not only delivering a high impact program in schools; we are at the forefront of education reform and strengthening after-school learning opportunities throughout the Garden State.
