The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Citizen Schools, led by 2005 Skoll social entrepreneur Eric Schwarz, to support its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) apprenticeships, specifically to increase computing apprenticeships nationwide.  This prestigious grant will help Citizen Schools to significantly increase the number of students who have the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals and graduate students from information technology and other scientific fields on projects ranging from computer game design to robotics to web design.

Late almost any afternoon when Congress is in session, a series of receptions gets under way in the House and Senate office buildings that line the avenues on each side of the Capitol. I went to one such reception recently hosted by Citizen Schools, a Boston-based nonprofit that recruits volunteers to tutor kids after school with a focus on middle-school kids in low-income communities. They have shown measurable success in boosting student achievement with an expanded learning day, and are credited with helping to transform over a three-year period the Clarence R. Edwards School in Boston, which had been one of the lowest-performing middle schools in the city.

12 students at Lowe's Grove Middle School in Durham presented their dishes to a panel of five judges during their 'Iron Chef' style competition. The competition was the culmination of a ten week cooking apprenticeship hosted by the Durham County Department of Public Health. Students cooked up stir-fry with wholesome, healthy ingredients and learned important lessons about nutrition and healthy eating.

If the proposal becomes reality, all 200 of Neal's sixth grade students, plus a much smaller group of seventh-and-eighth graders, would stay three hours beyond the regular 2:20 p.m. dismissal to engage in Citizen Schools' extra-hours program. Stephanie Couch, program director for the California STEM Innovation Network, observed the truism that schools teach to what they measure. Students are given statewide STAR tests in science only in fifth grade. It's no coincidence then that a Bay Area study found that K-5 teachers spend less than an hour per week teaching science. Kids must have the time and the tools to experiment and develop a passion for science and engineering. In the near term, that will probably have to take place in after-school programs.
